  • Taufik Muhtarom, Young Lecturer Upy won the Ph.D title in Taiwan with great satisfaction

Taufik Muhtarom, Ph.D a young lecturer from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Educational Sciences at the University of PGRI Yogyakarta won his doctorate (Ph.D) at the Department of Education and Human Potential Development, National Dong Hwa University (NDHU), Taiwan. The permanent lecturer at the PGSD University PGRI Yogyakarta (UPY) study program was declared to have graduated with a very satisfying title.

Open exams were held online through the Google Meeting platform on Tuesday (6/27/2023). The examiner consists of 3 professors from the NDHU campus and 2 professors from other campuses in Taiwan. The examiners consist of Prof. Chen Hsinyi, Prof. Chang Te-Sheng, Prof. Liu Mingzhou, Prof. Kao Tai-Chien and Prof. Liang Ting Tsai.

In the test Taufik Muhtarom presented a dissertation titled & LDQUO; the relationship between math learning experiences and math achievement among elementary students in Indonesia: Mediating Effect of Self Belief & Rdquo;. In his presentation before the examiner Taufik Muhtarom explained the points of his dissertation. Taufik explained that the lag of the quality of Indonesian education with other countries as evidenced by the low ranking of the score of numeration of international survey institutions such as Timss and Pisa became a strong alarm for related parties to try to participate in repairing it.

One of the efforts that can be done is to conduct research on the influence of mathematics learning experiences on learning achievement mediated by self belief students in learning mathematics. Self Belief is one of the psychological aspects of students in participating in mathematics learning that is rarely given serious attention. Though some research results show that the math self belief variable and the ability of student numeration show a positive relationship. In his research, Taufik highlighted the role of mediation from self belief consisting of math anxiety (learning anxiety), math self efficacy, and Math Self Concept (self -concept) in mathematics learning experiences and student learning achievement. After conducting research with samples as many as 810 elementary school students used data analysis techniques in a hierarchical multiple regression model, the results found that there was a positive and significant influence from the learning experience of elementary school students on mathematics learning achievement with the support of the role of Math Self Belief’s mediation. The results of his research confirm the social cognitive theory of Bandura which states that most human learning occurs in a social interaction. Individual processes in gaining knowledge can be directly related to observation of social interaction, learning experiences and the influence of existing media.

According to Taufik Muhtarom, the implication of the results of his research is that teachers at elementary school level, especially mathematics teachers, need to pay great attention to the psychological aspects of students such as learning anxiety, self -efficacy and students’ self -concept in participating in mathematics learning in class. Teachers need to provide mathematics learning experiences for students by doing many learning innovations with several varied learning models or with interesting learning media. In addition, teachers also need to reduce or negate negative threats and punishment to students when learning mathematics takes place. This is necessary so that students can reduce learning anxiety and improve self -efficacy and concepts when learning mathematics takes place. Armed with low self -anxiety, self -efficacy and high self -concept will affect the improvement of student mathematics learning achievement in elementary schools.
